What Is PVC Pipe—and How Does It Differ from ABS?

PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is one of the most commonly used materials in residential plumbing and construction. Originally synthesized in 1872 by a German chemist, PVC became more flexible and widely adopted after Waldo Semon and the B.F. Goodrich Company enhanced its properties. Today, PVC piping is prized for its durability, affordability, and resistance to corrosion. It’s used in everything from drainage systems to irrigation.
