What Is a Cornice—and Why It Matters in Home Design
A cornice is a horizontal decorative molding, derived from the Italian word for “ledge,” used to add visual interest to both interiors and exteriors. These design elements can range from grand concrete bands atop high-rise buildings to modest wooden trims above living room windows or curtain rods. Technically, fascia boards or roof eaves can be considered cornices, but the term typically refers to more ornamental architectural features. Cornices serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, framing the structure and enhancing curb appeal. Just be prepared for odd looks if you casually mention hanging holiday lights on your cornice—unless you’re a design professional.
