What Is MDF—and When Should You Use It in Home Projects?
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a budget-friendly material commonly used in carpentry and DIY woodworking. Made from sawdust and resin compressed under high pressure, MDF provides a smooth, uniform surface that’s easy to cut and shape. It’s especially ideal for shelving, storage units, cabinet backs, and decorative trim work. While MDF isn’t as strong as plywood, it’s a practical choice for indoor projects where cost and ease of use matter. For flooring applications, MDF can serve as an underlayment layer, but it should be kept away from high-moisture areas to prevent warping or swelling over time.
