What Is Flux—and Why It’s Essential for Copper Pipe Soldering
Flux is a key component in soldering copper pipes, essential for creating strong, leak-proof joints in residential plumbing systems. This acidic paste, typically packaged in a small tin, is applied after cleaning the pipe and fitting surfaces with emery cloth or a wire brush. Once applied, the flux prepares the metal, preventing oxidation and helping draw molten solder into the joint. After heating the connection with a torch, solder is applied around the seam to seal it.
